Overview:

It’s time to break down barriers that prevent clinicians and other care team members from accessing mental health care. But first, we must understand why many clinicians don’t seek out this care. A new research report uncovers institutional, structural and cultural barriers that prevent many clinicians from seeking mental health care.

More than 2,000 nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians and physician assistants participated in a survey that informed the report, which provides insights for healthcare leaders, learners and advocates working to improve the safety and wellbeing of care team members.

Co-authors of the report will share findings from the research and discuss implications of the barriers identified. They will also explore six solution areas to break down these barriers to help clinicians and other team members feel safer accessing mental health care without fear of personal judgement or professional repercussion.

Join this important discussion and learn how you can help normalize conversations about mental health care and support team members who deserve the same confidential care as patients. Patient safety starts with care team safety, which includes psychological and emotional wellbeing, dignity and inclusion, and physical safety.

Key takeaways:

  1. Identify and understand perceived institutional, structural and cultural barriers clinicians face when seeking mental health care.
  2. Explore evidence-informed strategies to break down barriers that prevent clinicians from accessing mental health care.
  3. Turn knowledge into action and help advance a new definition of care team safety that protects the psychological and emotional wellbeing of our healthcare workforce.
