DESCRIPTION:

Effective Communication with Patients & Families is essential to strengthen clinicians’ communication skills to prevent harm and build stronger patient and family partnerships. The session emphasizes practical tools and phrases clinicians can use immediately — from structured team handoffs to empathy‑based approaches for difficult conversations — so participants leave with actionable strategies to reduce safety risks.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Identify communication barriers that increase safety risk.
  • Apply briefs, huddles, SBAR, check-back, and CUS to common healthcare communication scenarios.
  • Use Ask-Tell-Ask and empathy statements during difficult conversations with patients and families.
  • Connect communication reliability to patient/family partnership and harm prevention.
